Exercise and Diet Update - Week 2

Confession time...

... I completely psyched myself out at the gym this week.  I still went to all four sessions I'd committed myself to but felt a bit like I was just going through the motions.  It was only once I got home on Thursday night that I kind of realised I do this to myself all the time.

By nature I'm really impatient, and I think my thoughts when it comes to diet and exercise are "well if I'm not seeing results now, there's just no point is there?"  It's a crappy little vicious circle, and I end up staying overweight and unhappy.  Not good!

Well this time I'll be damned if I sabotage myself again.  I got myself to the gym on Friday night and tried to have a new attitude, setting myself smaller immediate goals, like another interval on the rowing machine and an extra set of reverse crunches.  It was the first time all week that my muscles hurt and it made me feel so much better.

On an even more positive note I've been so much better at not eating as much processed food during the week and I've probably lost a pound or two through that alone.  I've been letting myself relax again this weekend and had a little treat from a local bakery today.

Next week the plan is to get back into the gym with the same focus I put in on Friday, and to keep my fingers crossed that I can keep it up this time!

Religion Undivided Purse

It's so rare for me to ever like purses, so I was delighted when I found and instantly loved the Religion Undivided purse.  It wasn't easy getting hold of it though. I originally saw it in Topshop back in December but didn't have the cash for it.  As is pretty typical of me, I then took ages deciding if I actually wanted to buy it or not, and when I finally made my mind up and got myself back to Topshop it was gone.  Gutted!

I didn't give up there though, I spent what seemed like forever searching all over the internet trying to find somewhere else that stocked it.  I even tried asking Religion if they knew where might have one; they were pretty useless though, answering my email to say they'd look into it but never actually getting back to me.  Eventually i found it, completely by chance, on House of Fraser's website and purchased it immediately.

When it arrived after a week I was so pleased with it, it's got kind of a beat-up look about it, and anything with both studs and a Union Jack involved is a winner for me.  It's got a surprising amount of space when it opens up too and comfortably takes all of my cards and a bit of change.  I hope we'll be very happy together for many moons to come.

Exercise Update

Tomorrow I start week two of my new exercise routine at the gym.  I've actually been surprised by how much I enjoyed week one; this is definitely down to the trainer who designed my fitness programme; it has a bit of variety and doesn't keep me doing one thing for too long (a one-way ticket to boredom for me).

I start off doing a quick warm up on the rowing machine, followed by 10 minutes on the recumbant bike and 10 minutes on the cross trainer.  With the cardio out of the way I move onto the toning exercises for arms, legs and abs, and I'm out of the gym in about an hour, total.

In this first week I was at the gym on Monday and Tuesday, had a break on Wednesday, and was there again on Thursday and Friday.  My plan is to keep at this routine for 6 weeks and then go back to my trainer for a new, hopefully harder, plan.  

Obviously in the first week I haven't noticed any difference in my body, apart from everything hurting, but I'm certain that if I keep up this pace I'll notice some changes for the better.  I feel like I'll be able to start making some changes to my diet moving into this next week too.  I'm not planning on anything drastic, just cutting out anything processed and laying off the unhealthy snacks during the week.  On the weekend, I'll be taking a complete break from the gym and going easy on the diet restrictions.

Roll on the day when I can start buying some new clothes for my new size.

The one to beat

Last night I was feeling particularly virtuous when I got home from the gym and decided to clean some of my brushes rather than leave them til the morning.  As I got round to rinsing and drying I realized that the Aveda lip brush I have (the last one on the left in the pic below) is over 10 years old!!!

It's not one of those brushes that languishes in the back of my brush collection either, it gets used (mostly for concealer) and cleaned at least 3 times a week, and it's still beautifully soft, never sheds, and works like a charm.  I don't have any special cleansing routine for my brushes either, the small ones just get a spot clean with diluted mac brush cleanser when they need it, and a good clean with baby shampoo when I remember.

Considering this brush probably cost about £15 or £20 back when i got it i think it's safe to say that it's more than paid for itself in the amount of use I've got out of it.  It's funny to think too that I have brushes that probably cost me the same, that I've had for less than half the time and they're in nowhere near as good nick.

This brush has definitely set the bar for me when it comes to quality and longevity, and if all Aveda brushes are still at this standard I'd be more than happy to invest in more in the future.

Not so great

Ok, so I've been feeling absolutely horrible the last few days.  I was already feeling quite run down, and drinking lots of extra water seems to have made all those nasty toxins heading out of my system have some interesting effects.  I've had a cold sore (made much less severe by taking copious amounts of lysine), some lovely breakouts and just a general feeling of exhaustion and ickiness. Charming!

I've been doing a few things to try and help me feel better since Friday though and so far it seems to be working.  I've been taking shots of wheatgrass, drinking smoothies, and generally trying to stick with making good nutritious food.  Now, wheatgrass tastes disgusting, and I don't have it very often, but with all those extra amino acids, vitamins and minerals it's one of those things I always reach for when I'm not feeling my best.

Anyway, now that I'm feeling a little better I have absolutely no excuse not to get on with my exercise plan, so in approximately 45 minutes, I will be having an induction at my local gym.  I'm hoping I'll be one of those people who gets bitten by the exercise bug once I get going, but I suspect I'm more likely to find it a terminal chore.  Oh well...

Time to act

Eating piles of comfort food on a night has become a bit of a theme for me over the past few months. It's obviously a Winter thing, getting home from work I can think of nothing better than cooking up a big bowl of pasta, chilli, etc, etc, and getting cosy on the sofa.

This habit really hasn't been good for my waistline though; I'm not sure how much weight I've put on exactly, but you can see from the pic below that I'm not exactly svelte!

I figure with Spring (hopefully) just around the corner, it's time for me to act and set myself a bit of a get healthy challenge. I'm not talking about going on some kind of crazy diet (I've tried all sorts in the past and they just don't work for me) rather I want to set myself some mini challenges that will help me drop a bit of weight, tone myself up and improve how my skin is looking.

Now, I already do some exercise every day (cycling to work and back is an 8 mile round trip), but obviously my body has got used to this and I need to work in some more exercise. So my first challenge to myself is to try to fit in 3 workouts a week. I have a few fitness DVDs and weights at home so I'm prepared and really have no excuse.

Obviously making sure I'm drinking two litres of water a day, and making some small improvements to my diet (less carbs, more leafy greens) along the way will help, but I'll try one main challenge at a time until they become habit.

This is me

Soooo this is my new blog. It's probably a massive cliche, but I recently had a bit of a milestone birthday and it got me thinking about my life, about where I am now and about what I want to do in the future.

I won't go into too much detail (yet!) but there are certain things I want to change about myself, I want to explore my style, rediscover my love of all things make-up and skincare, and maybe do something about eating better and exercising more.

I don't know where all of this will take me yet, but I'm excited to get started, and if anyone is interested in reading, I hope you enjoy it too!
